Christ Centered, Servant Hearted, Myanmar Focused
“Of all things, guard against neglecting God in the secret place of prayer.” William Wilberforce
The secret of hope is about possibilities; the notion that there are better days ahead. When possibilities grow faint or evaporate, hope is placed at arms length too afraid of failure. Most of us have felt that pain when hope stopped waiting on us to appreciate our everyday blessings. Hope has to be recharged at times with reflection upon those blessings we periodically take for granted.
Have you forgotten about any of these blessings:
- a loving, mutually-respectful marriage
- a Christ-centered church
- healthy children, grandchildren
- supportive friends
- caring neighbors
- fulfilling job
- freedoms such as worship within a democratic country
- rights such as voting
- Christian parents, grandparents
- an ac/heated home
- a refrigerator, stove, microwave oven, washer/dryer
- ample food in your pantry
- access to clean water for cooking, cleaning, drinking
- decent vehicle for transportation
- money for food, fuel, and other necessities
- well-equipped schools with professionally trained teachers
- access to doctors, hospitals, and pharmacies
- reliable sources of electricity, internet, phone service
- a military that protects its citizens, not one that kills them
These are just some of the blessings many of us can claim. However, until we place them in the frame of reference held by those less fortunate such as the Myanmar people, we can’t truly appreciate the depth of their struggle. If you can really understand how blessed you are then, you can begin to realize the gaping difference between your way of life and the way of life in Myanmar.
The Myanmar people are in a war for hope, and it would mean more than you can imagine if they knew you were for them. I encourage you at this time of thanksgiving, during your quiet intimate moments of prayer, to not only thank God for the ways in which He has blessed your life, but to help the Myanmar people move beyond their oppression towards discovering the hope that is theirs in a personal relationship with Him. Let us not underestimate the power of prayer to overcome our absence in Myanmar with a form of spiritual courage which can keep the light of hope from going out in one of the spiritually darkest places on earth.
