Because of the military coup, thousands of families have been forced from their villages, including countless school-aged children. As a result, many schools have been closed throughout the country given junta hostilities or their curriculums shortened due to a lack of teachers. In some cases, education facilities have been occupied by junta forces. The education of a generation of children is being lost. This is a pivotal time for an organization to help support a declining education system in Myanmar. We have outlined below a plan for assisting in the education of these children which we have already successfully implemented in an undisclosed area. We believe we can replicate this effort in other locations with the necessary financial support detailed below.
Purposes:
- To assist children having difficulty with lessons from attending government schools during the day with evening tutoring sessions which also periodically exposes them to Christian values and beliefs,
- in areas where schools have been closed due to junta hostilities, provide classes where parental interest is expressed and designed with parental input to ensure children develop knowledge and skills relevant to their lives,
- develop an interest in Christianity and attending one of our house churches, and
- create a pool of students who will more likely succeed in furthering their education in a vocational training program with the goal of getting out of poverty.
Where: Rural villages or very poor urban neighborhoods within our current ministry areas which include: Chin State, Karen State, Mon State, Tanintharyi Division, Mandalay Division, metropolitan Yangon.
By whom: There are thousands of unemployed but certified teachers who voluntarily resigned their positions to join the Civil Disobedience Movement in defiance of the junta military coup. We can provide these teachers with the opportunities to apply their passion and training. Hopefully, some of them will be willing to undertake the unique challenges our program offers.
For whom: Classes will be tailored to the ethnicity, local language, and age groups within the village area where interest is expressed; in some areas the interest may be mostly for elementary level children whereas in another area the interest may be for high school level children. Regardless of the age group, the classes will be open to everyone no matter their religious background.
Budget: (based on a class size of 40 students with 1 teacher per 20 students; school year is June-March( 10 months); Total $4,500/yr.)
